Beans on Toast

There was once a grumpy, and smelly young man,
Who lived in a flat with his frail old Gran.
She would cook and she’d clean, she’d polish and sweep,
whilst lazy young Stan would do nothing but sleep.

Now Stan was a bright and clever boy,
but days in bed is where he found joy!
Granny was old, when she moved she would creak,
and soon became tired of cleaning all week.

So one day she stopped to snooze in her chair,
Stan only noticed when dinner wasn’t there!
He poked his head out and peered past his door,
hungrier now than ever before!

Spotting Granny, he emerged from his room,
he tried to wake her with a bang and a boom!
But Granny simply snorted and turned away,
Stan huffed and he grumbled “Guess i’m cooking today”.

He stormed to the kitchen, stamping his feet.
Should he have, vegetables, chicken, stew or meat?
Decisions, decisions what should he cook?!
After searching and searching through every cookbook,
Poor Stan decided he shouldn’t risk a roast,
instead he was stuck with beans on toast!

He had watched Granny cook it once, long ago,
Now Granny was watching him, little did he know.
Tucked up with a blanket sat in her seat,
a prime spot to sit and watch Stan try to eat!

He wrestled with the toaster and cutting the bread,
at one point he considered starving instead!
If only he wasn’t so lazy and sluggish he’d know,
where the tin opener, cans and saucepans go!

After any hour or so Granny shuffled in,
to offer Stan help opening the tin.
And so Granny taught young Stan how to cook,
not once did she have to refer to a book.

Within one week lazy Stan cooked his roast,
with a little help from Granny he was able to boast,
“I like to cook when Granny makes our flat clean,
together we make an incredible team!”

As the days went by, Stan started to bloom,
cooking and cleaning, not hidden away in his room,
Granny was so happy living with an active young chap,
it meant she was able to catch the odd nap.

  1. Very child friendly and a nice little read. Reminded me of my inner child and made me smile throughout. Look forward to reading other stories you have.
